CLUB NEWS  03/12/2018

I think the majority of us bowlers are thankful that the year is coming to an end, and we can all have a well deserved break. It has been hectic to say the least.

On Tuesday afternoon we had the usual gale force winds and some bowlers stopped play at tea time as it was just too unpleasant with the woods being blown all over the show. Some braved it out and the Personal Trust competition was won by Trevor Frost and his team of Phil Taylor, the sponsor from Personal Trust Carl Vermeulen, and Jim Haswell. Well done and thank you to Personal Trust for their continued support.

We had our annual prize giving on Tuesday night, and all the worthy recipients received their cups for the various competitions won during the year. Our most improved player of the year was Robin Collett who received the Jane Armitage cup for the most improved player of the year. Well done Robin, all your extra practice sessions at the club paid off.

Our usual month end bowls night took place on Friday night despite a howling gale and ten ends were played. Everybody and non bowlers are welcome to join us. The competition was won by Trevor Frost, Arnie Schultz and Lilian Neave. Some people braaied and a good time had by all.

Our Harry Owsley competition was held this weekend and we had 24 teams playing from all over. The overall winners were none other but our Ron Orford who with his team of Phil Taylor, Woza Williams, Emil Jurgensen and John Hodges who filled in on Saturday morning excelled themselves to win. I have been told that Ron Orford was the man of the match, and the wind on Saturday afternoon was no match for Ron and his size 6 bowls, as they kept their line and kept rolling straight to the jack.

2nd place was Geoff Gowar and his team from the Woods in Port Elizabeth, 3rd was Paul Spriggs and his team from Port Elizabeth bowling club, and 4th Terry Cawood and his team from Westview Bowling club.

We wish to thank Augusta Steel again for their generous sponsorship as well as the other sponsorships received from local businesses. We thank Mrs Ferguson from Augusta Steel for being with us to hand out the prizes to all the winners.

Our Christmas dinner is on the 9th December, and if you haven’t booked please book as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
